Case Example: The Mean Height of Stanford Students


The population of Stanford students is comprised of approximately 30,000 male and female members.  Since it would be impractical for us to survey the entire population for the purposes of illustrating this elementary concept, we shall take a population sample of 32 students picked at random.  Here are the results:

To find the Mean, we simply input the data into the equation displayed on the previous page.

We find that the Mean= 67.97 inches.  The Median  is 67.5 inches. What is the sample variance?
