The Molecular Imaging Program at Stanford (MIPS) was established as an inter-disciplinary program to bring together scientists and physicians who share a common interest in developing and using state-of-the-art imaging technology and developing molecular imaging assays for studying intact biological systems. A multimodality approach using imaging technologies such as positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), digital autoradiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), optical bioluminescence, optical fluorescence, and ultrasound are all technologies under active development and investigation. The goals of the program are to fundamentally change how biological research is performed with cells in their intact environment in living subjects and to develop new ways to diagnose diseases and monitor therapies in patients. Areas of active investigation are cancer research, microbiology/immunology, developmental biology and pharmacology.

NIBIB Funds T32 Training Grant in Cardiovascular Imaging

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering has funded Stanford for a T32 Training Grant to train the next generation of cardiovascular imaging researchers (PI: M.V. McConnell, Co-PIs: S.S. Gambhir, J.M. Pauly). The "Multi-Disciplinary Training Program in Cardiovascular Imaging" will train 4 post-doctoral fellows every 2 years, bringing together MD's and/or PhD's from clinical, bioengineering, and molecular imaging backgrounds. Aided by 16 faculty mentors from Cardiovascular Medicine, Radiology, Engineering, and MIPS, the fellows will pursue advanced research while also training together in collaborative problem-solving and biodesign.

Paper on a Photoactivable Bioluminescent Probe Featured in Analytica-World & Bionity

June 25, 2009
Work published in the Chemical Communication on the development of a photoactivable bioluminescent probe for imaging luciferase activity in live animals is featured in Analytica-World and Bionity. This work is a collaborative effort between the Cancer Molecular Imaging Chemistry Laboratory at Stanford and Dr. Bengang Xing's lab at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
